Tell us a bit about yourself.

I am a 2024 MinterEllison Technology Consulting Graduate based in Canberra. I graduated university with a Computer Science degree in hand and no clue what I could do with it! I wanted to explore everything the professional world had to offer me, and consulting seemed like just the thing. I have been learning ever since.

I've always been interested in technology and computer science, but the idea of being a developer wasn't very appealing to me. As a technology consultant, I now get to explore the commercial world, while still working closely with technology.

What was it that attracted you to MinterEllison?

The idea of doing technology consulting with what at first I thought was only a law firm was so intriguing to me! MinterEllison is a unique firm that combines the stability of a large established firm with its smaller but growing technology consulting branch, which means there are a lot of opportunities for work you might not otherwise get to do. The size and reputation of the firm means that right from the start you'll be plugged into high-level engagements, but you'll get to work in smaller, more personal teams. There's a lot of opportunities for development initiatives and to make your own mark on the firm, too.

Tell us about your experience in the Technology Consulting graduate program.

Each day brings something new to work on, which I love. It's a dynamic place to work, and you collaborate closely with your team, who bring a diverse range of talents to the table. So I found myself learning a lot! As it was my first professional role, it was intimidating to start, but I found that everyone provides a lot of support, and there's an emphasis on long-term professional development as well.

What engagements have you worked on?

Lately I've been working on procurement and sourcing projects. I've also had the opportunity to work on a number of smaller side projects for internal development. Procurement is not something I ever figured that I would be working on, so it's very exciting to me.

What are you involved in beyond your role?

Recently, I've been doing movie nights after work with a friend. We make dinner together, whip up some hot choccies and eat a potentially alarming amount of marshmallows. Peak comfort! I'm also an avid Diplomacy player, so you can often find me cheerily negotiating alliances around a board, making enemies… and after the game, friends.

Tell us a bit about yourself and your time so far at MinterEllison?

My journey with MinterEllison began during my clerkship in the summer of 2022-2023. It was an incredible experience that solidified my desire to build a career here. Following that, I transitioned into a paralegal role, further expanding my legal knowledge and practical skills. Now, as a graduate rotating in the Technology Consulting team, I've been focusing on strategic consulting and emerging technology projects, particularly in AI and finance compliance.

From contributing to high-value M&A deals to developing automated workflows and AI governance policies for clients, my time at MinterEllison has been a constant learning process within a supportive and collaborative environment.

What was it that attracted you to MinterEllison?

MinterEllison's reputation for excellence and its commitment to innovation were key factors. I was drawn to the opportunity to work on complex matters for major clients, while also being involved in shaping the future of legal practice through technology. The firm's emphasis on learning and development, evident from my clerkship experience onward, resonated with me. The collaborative culture and focus on mentorship were also highly appealing. Finally, the clerkship program itself solidified my interest in MinterEllison - the hands-on experience and supportive environment were truly invaluable.

You’ve recently done a clerkship with us, how was that process and any advice for future clerks?

The clerkship program at MinterEllison was exceptional. It wasn't just about observing, I was actively involved in real legal work, contributing to client matters alongside experienced lawyers. This practical experience, combined with rotations and social events, provided invaluable insights into the firm and different practice areas. The supportive environment fostered a strong sense of community, and the opportunities to learn from experienced lawyers at all levels were invaluable.

My advice for future clerks is to be proactive and show your curiosity. Seek out opportunities to learn new skills and contribute to projects. Networking with lawyers and participating in events are some great ways to achieve this. Additionally, stay organised and manage your time effectively throughout the application process. Finally, be yourself and demonstrate your passion for commercial law!

What rotations have you done?

As a clerk I rotated in Tech Law and Real Estate, as a Paralegal I was in Property Finance and as a Graduate I have rotated through M&A and Technology Consulting.

What projects have you worked on?

The projects I've been involved with at MinterEllison have been incredibly diverse and challenging. As a Lawyer, I contributed to high-value M&A deals, conducted due diligence, and even developed innovative tools to automate tasks within the firm. Now, as a Consultant, I'm focusing on strategic consulting and emerging technology projects, particularly in AI and finance compliance. Some highlights include: developing AI ethical principles for clients, automating contract request intake processes, and even creating an document automation tools to reduce manual workloads. This variety of experiences has allowed me to develop a versatile skillset and gain a practical understanding of the legal and business landscape.

What has been a highlight at work for you?

One of the biggest highlights for me has been the opportunity to contribute to projects that have a tangible impact, both internally and for our clients. For instance, developing an internal tool that automated resource allocation was incredibly rewarding. Seeing how it streamlined processes and saved the team significant time and effort was a real source of pride. More recently, working on AI governance policies for clients has been a highlight. It's exciting to be at the forefront of this emerging area of law and to help clients navigate the commercial, legal and ethical complexities of AI adoption. These experiences, where I can apply my skills to solve real-world problems and drive positive change, are what make working at MinterEllison so fulfilling.

What was it that attracted you to MinterEllison?

The firms’ pre-eminent industry reputation was always something that I aspired to be a part of. However, it was the positive word of mouth stories from people that had worked for the firm that originally sparked my interest to apply.

You’ve recently done a clerkship with us, how was that process and any advice for future clerks?

The clerkship process was very rewarding. If you have the opportunity to apply, definitely do so. My advice would be to make sure you embrace the program as much possible. While you’re there to learn about your possible career path, also make sure to take opportunities to connect with as many people as you can (don’t be shy to ask questions). Demonstrating an eagerness to engage and learn is crucial, but stay true to yourself – Minters genuinely encourages everyone to remain confident in their own unique skills and experiences.

What rotations have you done?

As a clerk, I rotated through the Workplace and Construction teams. As a graduate, my first rotation was within the Competition, Risk and Regulatory team and my second rotation has been within Real Estate. Throughout my rotations, I have been fortunate to be exposed to a wide range of matters, both transactional and litigious, and work alongside lawyers with extensive expertise in each subject area. Each rotation provides an opportunity to develop a different skill set and network with people across the firm. I feel very lucky to have had the chance to rotate through different teams and believe it has been an invaluable foundation for my career as a lawyer.

Tell us a bit about yourself and your time so far at MinterEllison?

As a proud Italian-Australian, I cherish family, food and I’m always down to talk anything soccer. I started at MinterEllison two years ago as a clerk and continued working as a paralegal during my final year of university. I’m now an admitted lawyer having rotated in the Transactions Solutions (M&A) and Environment and Planning teams, and I am looking forward to new and exciting experiences in my third rotation.

Can you share some of the key skills you believe were crucial during your clerkship?

I think some of the key skills that helped me throughout the clerkship were:

  • Enthusiasm and positivity about the opportunity and work given to me. Enthusiasm can be infectious, boost the morale of others, and make challenges manageable!
  • Attention to detail. Legal work often involves intricate details and it’s important that your work isn’t undermined by silly mistakes or oversights.
  • Curiosity and a willingness to learn. Asking questions and having conversations with people is a great way to learn more about an area of law and the corporate world (and also get to know people on a human level - it’s not all about work!).

Can you share a memorable experience from your clerkship that had a significant impact on you?

For me, the highlight was the clerk social events and team interactions. Although some find the prospect of making friends with 30 fellow clerks overwhelming, I was fortunate to clerk at MinterEllison at the same time as my partner and one of my best friends. However, any perceived advantage I thought this would give me was nullified because of the strong camaraderie among the clerks and how easy it was to get along with everyone in the teams I rotated in. These experiences highlighted the firm’s friendly and down-to-earth culture that sets it apart and influenced my decision to undertake my graduate program at MinterEllison.

Tell us a bit about yourself?

I have been a part of MinterEllison for just over a year. Coming straight out of University with a Bachelor’s Degree in Commerce and a Computer Science Diploma, I joined the Technology Consulting Graduate Program in Melbourne in February 2022. I have always had a fascination with technology and its ability to enhance our everyday lives. Working in and around technology on a daily basis allows for my work to closely align with my interests. Coupled with the commercial and business aspects of Tech Consulting, this work has allowed me to utilise and further develop all my knowledge that I acquired during my university degree.

Tell us about your experience in the Technology Consulting graduate program?

If you live by the mantra that “Variety is the spice of life”, then the Technology Consulting Graduate Program is the place to be. The program has allowed me to work across multiple projects with a plethora of different people each bringing diverse expertise. I have developed a variety of skills whilst enhancing my  Technology and business acumen. Sometimes it can be intimidating starting your career, however I have received an abundance of support to ensure I am fully supported at my first full-time job. A strong emphasis of the program has been on long-term development that extends beyond its one and a half years and I feel confident in the career paths offered by MinterEllison once I become a consultant.
